Live Free or Die Hard: Secession Movement Explodes

AUTHOR Joshua Wychopen

Less than two days after we first reported about the petitions on the White House website to allow more than 20 states to secede from the United States, nearly half of them have achieved the necessary signatures needed to initiate a ‘response’ from the Obama administration as promised.

By 9:00am CST Wednesday, almost 700,000 signatures appeared on secession petitions covering all 50 states. While petitions from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina and Tennessee have amassed the minimum 25,000 signatures needed, the State of Texas petition leads all others by a wide margin – confirming the adage, “Everything is Bigger in Texas.”

In a statement made Tuesday afternoon, a spokesperson for Gov. Rick Perry said that he does not support the idea of his state striking out on its own. “Gov. Perry believes in the greatness of our Union and nothing should be done to change it. But he also shares the frustrations many Americans have with our federal government.”

While some may be very firmly decided on their intentions to leave the Union, others are ready to respond with equal tenacity. Late Monday night, Douglas H from Escondido, CA filed a petition to “Strip the Citizenship from Everyone who Signed a Petition to Secede and Exile Them”. To further complicate the situation, individuals from Austin Texas, filed a petition to, “Peacefully grant the city of Austin Texas to withdraw from the state of Texas & remain part of the United States.”

While others seem to be filing petitions to simply follow what other states have done, Texas seems to have some pretty clear ideas and reasons as to why they are ready to secede. Petition creator for the State of Texas, Micah H writes, “The US continues to suffer economic difficulties stemming from the federal government’s neglect to reform domestic and foreign spending. The citizens of the US suffer from blatant abuses of their rights such as the NDAA, the TSA, etc. Given that the state of Texas maintains a balanced budget and is the 15th largest economy in the world, it is practically feasible for Texas to withdraw from the union, and to do so would protect it’s citizens’ standard of living and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our founding fathers which are no longer being reflected by the federal government.”

Rightly so, this Texan brings to the forefront the ongoing issues many Americans have had with the authoritarian laws and bureaucratic policies of the federal government over the past few decades, which stand in stark contrast to the spirit of the Republic.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) an arm of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been doubling down on their authoritarian policies for several years, extending their reach further and further. Some are molested and humiliated, others are conditioned that these new expanding policies are quite all right for Americans. No longer an America “innocent until proven guilty” by due process, we have become the nation of “guilty until proven innocent” . . . guilty until proven slave. But only if you’d like to travel by plane, train or bus. You could choose to just stay home – is this the America we really want?

Also, troubling to Texans is the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012 (Pub. L. No. 112-81) or NDAA. The US military gained the “legal” ability to operate on US soil, an unprecedented move by congress, nose-thumbing Posse Comitatus. Also, sections 1021 and 1022 gave the federal government the power to “legally” detain American citizens and hold them indefinitely without due process by simply reclassifying anyone as a “terrorist.” As the scope of what a “terrorist” means dramatically changes and normal everyday actions become terrorist activity, most Americans find themselves quickly falling into that category. Action was taken to kill a US citizen, turned terrorist, Anwar al-Awlaki by a drone strike in Yemen in September 2011. Which causes many to bring into question the legitimacy and security of their freedom and right to due process. With that precedence set, no Americans are safe from a drone strike should some department of the federal government deem you a terrorist.

Texas appears to be moving to nullify both the National Defense Authorization Act as well as the horrible groping (enhanced pat-down) policies of the TSA.

It is very clear that Americans are divided. While some choose to ignore these authoritarian, unconstitutional measures, others engage the populous with an information campaign of liberty and the true spirit of 1776. Although it is likely most signing these petitions are not expecting anything of real substance to happen, they are quite satisfied to be making a bold statement to the establishment – eerily similar to a message our founding fathers made in 1776, “…But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.” – The Declaration of Independence, 1776
